WHY DO I NEED YOU WHEN I'M GOOD AT DIY?

There are lots of DIY jobs around the house that you can tackle yourself, but be aware that wood floor sanding and finishing is not something for a spare afternoon, like fixing a drainpipe or repairing the weights in a sash window. To get a truly professional finish rather than just a roughly sanded and stained floor you need to call on the services of the Southwark floor sanding and finishing experts.

A sanding machine from a hire shop will be rented out most of the time – you’ll have to book it – and therefore it won’t be maintained to ensure top performance. It will also be an older model and so not as efficient as the latest technology. Our sanding machines have the latest dust-free designs and work at optimal efficiency because they’re regularly serviced.

Applying a finish correctly is also a highly skilled job and if you mess it up you’ll negate all the effort you made in repairing and sanding the floor. CAN YOU DO IT WITHOUT MAKING A MESS?

Mess is no more of a problem with sanding these days than it is with getting a fitted carpet laid. Modern sanding machines are designed to completely contain dust production by trapping it all in airbags fitted to the machine. Our Southwark floor sanding and renovation teams will also use tape to seal off other rooms, and before they pack up and leave they’ll clean everything up anyway. Dust is no longer a concern when you call our floor sanding experts in.

In the case of school floor sanding and renovation in SE5 Southwark, we can even carry out all the repairs, sanding and finishing tasks during school holidays to save you disruption. For commercial floor sanding we’ll do everything outside of regular business hours.

HOW LONG BEFORE I NEED TO HAVE THE FLOOR SANDED AGAIN ?

When we’ve repaired, sanded and finished your floor you can expect years of use from it before it needs another overhaul. We use the latest eco-friendly fillers for the gaps and these provide a solid seal to complement the protective finish, so it should provide years of reliable service. Inevitably, however, it will start to look faded in places eventually and so we recommend that you have it buffed and polished at fairly regular intervals. If you look after it well by polishing it every few years – depending on traffic – it won’t need another sanding down for up to a decade. You may require more regular polishing if the floor is in a busy office or a family kitchen, but just call us and we’ll answer all your questions concerning wood floor maintenance.

IS A WAX, VARNISH OR OIL FINISH RECOMMENDED ?

There are weaknesses and strengths to every wooden floor but generally speaking for a normal home environment all three finishes are usually equally good. The question of choosing a finish only becomes critical when flooring in environments such as museums, restaurants and other public spaces is being considered.

There are a few points to bear in mind, however. If you choose a wax or varnish finish you’ll need to re-coat the floor periodically, and when patches appear the entire floor will need to be re-sanded because local repairs won’t be possible.

With oiling, the oils are absorbed into the wood to repel dirt and spilt liquids. The big benefit here is that local repairs are possible, but re-oiling will also be necessary more frequently than re-sanding for a wax or varnish finish.
